Since the late 1950s, the Remembrance/Côte-des-Neiges intersection, located at the western end of Mount Royal Park, was dominated by a elevated interchange. This was part of a circulation plan developed at the time to accomodate traffic around the mountain. From the early 2000s, the City of Montreal began dismantling these car-centric infrastructures to promote active mobility and improve access to the mountain.
The redesigned Remembrance/Côte-des-Neiges intersection now offers a level, safe, and welcoming space for pedestrians and cyclists. This development marks the completion of the last section of the Mount Royal ring road, following a gentle curve adapted to the site's steep topography. True to one of Frederic Law Olmsted's key principles, the route offers a gradual and picturesque ascent from surrounding neighborhoods to Beaver Lake, in a newly landscaped wooded environment that aims to enhance the mountain's ecosystem. Throughout the path, arrangements collect water and redirect it to a capture and retention basin, promoting optimized runoff water management.
As one of Mount Royal Park's main gateways, the new landscape also incorporates both conceptual and immersive design that evokes the mountain's three peaks and its natural geography. Crossing the new intersection, a trio of mounds integrates into the undulating terrain, inviting visitors to climb them and reconnect with the vast surrounding landscape.
