This split-level bungalow had not been renovated in several decades. Frozen in time, compartmentalized, and clad in aging dark wood panels, it called for a renewal that would honor its mid-century identity while meeting the needs of its new owners, who have a deep passion for cooking and entertaining.

The project rests on a dual intervention: a strategic extension that rebalances the proportions of the spaces, and a complete redesign of the interior layout that honors the mid-century spirit while updating it with elegance. The original wood panels, too damaged to be preserved, inspired the new material vocabulary. Contemporary wood paneling in warm tones punctuates the spaces, creating a dialogue between past and present.

The material palette cultivates an enveloping atmosphere. Wood becomes the guiding thread of the project, expressed through custom millwork and doors that structure the volumes with character. Warm tones blend with textured faux finishes and stone, creating a tactile richness that softens the spaces and transforms each room into a soothing retreat.

The common areas benefit from the newfound generosity of the volumes. A skylight, added at the heart of the home, transforms the quality of light throughout. The kitchen becomes the vibrant core of the residence, designed to embrace the owners' culinary passions. A central volume structures the open space with intelligence: it anchors the kitchen on one side, houses the living room storage, opens toward the dining area, and creates spatial coherence across the fluid zones.

This fluidity extends into the more intimate spaces. The bathrooms particularly embody this transformation. The introduction of soft architectural curves breaks the rigidity of the past, creating an unexpected sensuality. The materials reinforce this zen atmosphere: stone and travertine bringing warmth, fine mosaics and fluted glass dressing certain surfaces, textured elements giving rhythm to the walls with delicacy.

Lighting reveals the textures and creates adaptable atmospheres. Integrated fixtures highlight the architectural curves, while wall sconces punctuate the walls with elegance.

This project proves that a renovation can honor the soul of a home while propelling it into a new era. By respecting the mid-century spirit while updating it with sensitivity, the intervention transforms a frozen bungalow into a warm, contemporary residence perfectly adapted to the lives of those who inhabit it.
