The BNV residential project offers a contemporary and sensitive reinterpretation of a typical building in Plateau Mont-Royal, Montreal. Through a gentle and careful intervention, it explores how architectural form can generate calm and meaning in the tumult of urban life while respecting universally recognized codes.
The existing L-shaped building retains its original volume but is subtly transformed by the gesture of the curve. The red brick facade, emblematic of Montreal's backyards, is redesigned to extend the continuity of the volume and soften the corner of the courtyard, creating a feeling of enclosure and protection.
Inside, natural light becomes a structuring element. A large skylight bathes the central space, where a curved staircase unfolds like a sculptural ribbon. It connects the living areas to a terrace installed on the former garage, overlooking the alley. The interior, with its light tones and deliberately blurred spatial boundaries, highlights objects, artworks, and framed views of the urban landscape.
The garage is now connected to the rest of the house by a glass walkway surrounding a small inner courtyard, designed as a secret garden. This luminous void, planted with an American honey locust, introduces a gentle temporality to the domestic space, marking the seasons and filtering air and light.
Rather than standing out, BNV chooses to integrate delicately. It reflects a desire to inhabit the city differently: in continuity, sensuality, and discretion.
