Parc de la Pointe-aux-Lièvres: A Meeting Place in the Heart of the Park!

The redevelopment of Parc de la Pointe-aux-Lièvres, located on a bend of the Saint-Charles River, is a landscape intervention that has completely transformed the area's dynamics—turning it from a transit space into a beloved, four-season destination.

Historically known for its industrial activities, this area has undergone a complete revitalization in recent years. The construction of the Turtle Bridge over the Saint-Charles River, along with a new service pavilion, has enhanced the park’s connection to its surroundings and neighboring environments. While the recreational trails were well developed for winter use, the heart of the park remained underutilized. As part of the eco-district development, the community expressed a strong desire to transform it into a true neighborhood park for residents and families—while also positioning it as a destination along the river corridor. This aspiration inspired both the City and the design team.

A Central, Four-Season Plaza

The design centers on the creation of a large, multifunctional, welcoming plaza at the main entrance, near the reception and service pavilion. This flexible space accommodates gatherings while maintaining the park’s human scale, thanks to movable furniture including colorful tables and umbrellas. Curved benches follow the organic shapes of planted islands. Shrub masses and tall trees offer refreshing breezes in the open area, which, over time, will provide shaded pockets—ideal during hot weather for cyclists and pedestrians seeking rest. In winter, the plaza transforms into a large icy surface where the park’s various skating trails converge.

Recreation for Every Taste

Radiating outward from the central plaza, new play areas border the core. Children’s playground equipment and a water play zone bring the edges to life. Pergolas with swings frame the plaza and offer cozy spots for relaxation.

In the background, visitors will find recreational equipment for all ages and skill levels, including Quebec’s very first outdoor Parkour area, dedicated to the art of movement. Outdoor fitness installations, such as climbing modules and balance games, are also integrated into the landscape.

Elsewhere in the park, small viewpoints along existing trails offer scenic views of the river.

These enhancements contribute to the growing reputation of Parc de la Pointe-aux-Lièvres as an inclusive, versatile, and vibrant four-season park. Once a neglected urban space, it is now a forward-thinking, innovative destination loved by all—helping to elevate the image of the City of Quebec.
