Founded 19 years ago, Atelier Urbain has established itself as a leading firm in planning, urban design, and facilitation, distinguished by its forward-thinking approach. Since its founding in 2007, the firm has set out to catalyze local strengths in order to develop meaningful projects that respond to collective aspirations and major contemporary challenges, particularly those related to socio-ecological transition.
Atelier Urbain's approach is grounded in the conviction that lasting territorial transformation requires mobilizing expertise and stakeholders around a shared vision. The team brings together a range of expertise in planning, regulation, urban design, facilitation and public participation, as well as real estate development. In both the selection and delivery of its mandates, the firm is committed to promoting and applying best practices in urban planning, directing its work toward concrete and lasting outcomes. It favors projects with a real impact on the quality of communities, emphasizing tangible and structuring transformations for the people who live in them.
Over the years, the firm has completed more than 500 projects in collaboration with over 185 municipalities, regional county municipalities (RCMs), and public organizations across Québec, elsewhere in Canada, and internationally. Innovation is at the heart of Atelier Urbain's practice. The firm has notably contributed to meaningfully integrating citizen participation into planning processes, adapting integrated design processes (IDP) to the field of urban planning, and introducing innovative regulatory approaches to Québec, including Form-Based Codes. More recently, the firm has developed integrated fiscal impact analysis approaches to inform public decision-making regarding the economic outcomes of planning choices. It also advances visualization tools for redevelopment potential, exploring different urban forms to concretely illustrate opportunities for transforming the built environment.
Atelier Urbain is the recipient of several Canadian Institute of Planners Awards for Planning Excellence, Grand Prix du Design awards, as well as distinctions such as the Prix Jalons de la mobilité and the Mérite municipal, recognizing its projects' contributions to planning innovation and the creation of high-quality living environments.
At the heart of these achievements lies a studio culture built on creativity, collaboration, and the shared pleasure of designing meaningful projects for communities. The team brings together some twenty passionate and committed professionals who share a drive to create resilient and inclusive projects capable of inspiring community pride and meeting the needs of future generations.
