The modernization of the plastic arts classroom at Pensionnat Notre-Dame-des-Anges transforms a former home economics classroom into a multi-zonal environment where collaborative learning is made visible. Conceived as a living laboratory, the studio integrates materials and creative processes into the learning landscape.
A continuous horizontal work surface anchors the space, linking the main activity area and storage area while preserving visual openness and maximizing natural light. Strategic openings along the corridor extend the studio beyond its physical boundaries, creating visual connections that reveal the creative process to passersby and position the classroom as an active, shared resource within the school.
A restrained material palette is animated by a single, defining gesture: a vibrant yellow service wall. Marking the entrance and organizing functional elements, it operates as both a visual landmark and an intuitive wayfinding device. In contrast, natural wood provides warmth and continuity, while muted display surfaces recede to highlight student work. Integrated millwork minimizes visual clutter, creating a clear, flexible environment that supports both focus and creative exchange.
The project demonstrates that functional efficiency and an inspiring atmosphere can seamlessly coexist.
