Opticane is a smart telescopic cane that empowers visually impaired users to navigate the world safely, confidently, and independently.
Developed as part of a broader exploration into accessible IoT solutions, this project began with the real-life story of a visually impaired woman whose daily interactions with more than 40 household and public objects inspired a deep dive into inclusive design. Among a range of concepts, the cane emerged as the most vital and versatile tool for everyday navigation.
Opticane reimagines the classic white cane as a dependable, tech-integrated companion. Embedded sensors, GPS, a discreet SOS system, and AI-powered voice feedback transform urban mobility into an experience defined by autonomy and control. A telescopic frame, ergonomic grip, and tactile surface details support intuitive use across varying levels of visibility. Bright, high-contrast accents enhance roadside visibility, while features such as obstacle detection and haptic navigation help users orient themselves and interact meaningfully with their environment.
Designed with care, empathy, and precision, Opticane is more than a mobility aid. It is an extension of the user’s independence.
