Reflections of Montreal: When the City Shapes the Space

Montreal International is a non-profit organization dedicated to positioning Montreal as a premier destination for international investors, entrepreneurs, and talent. Their objective was to design bright, uncluttered and dynamic workspaces that reflected the image of their team. Since Montreal is central to their activities, Métaphore Design felt it essential to embody this commitment through their environment.

The concept draws directly from the essence of the city —its rich history, iconic architecture, and urban lifestyle. Notable inspirations include the modular design of Habitat 67 and the vibrant street art scene of the Plateau Mont-Royal, both of which are subtly echoed in the design language.

The space layout was carefully planned to optimize fluidity and privacy. The reception area offers direct access to conference and meeting rooms, allowing visitors to be welcomed without disrupting the main work areas. This clear distinction between public and private zones enhances both comfort and productivity. A contrast in materials enhances the space’s aesthetic, combining raw concrete with wood finishes. This contrast is immediately apparent at the entrance, where a backlit glass reception desk adds lightness. The wood flooring, walls, and ceiling stand out against the exposed concrete ceilings and visible mechanical systems in the corridor, creating an elegant visual balance.

A mural by a local artist enlivens the path to the conference rooms, adding a playful touch and referencing iconic symbols of Montreal, such as bagels, Bixi bikes, and Saint Joseph’s Oratory.

The workspaces were designed to offer great flexibility and allow for personalization. "Pavilions," inspired by the Quebec Pavilion from Expo 67, are strategically placed throughout the open area, creating visual rhythm. Positioned at an angle, these pavilions define collaborative zones that encourage interaction and provide greater flexibility for employees. Following the same concept, angled ceiling drops were used to structure the space, creating distinct areas such as lounges, focus zones, and transitional spaces, while also serving as visual cues to guide users.

The cafeteria serves as a pivotal space, acting as both a welcoming area for networking events hosted by Montreal International and a venue for internal gatherings. It also doubles as a relaxation zone and an extension of the work environment, offering a more informal setting for employees. Flooded with natural light and overlooking the inner courtyard of the World Trade Centre, it has quickly become a cherished and sought-after space among employees.
