After designing the Matto restaurants in Old Quebec and Lévis, LemayMichaud was commissioned to design the new Matto Sainte-Foy. Located on the ground floor of a newly constructed building, the restaurant replaces the former Matto Myrand, which was lost due to an unforeseen incident. Positioned at the intersection of two streets, the restaurant enjoys remarkable visibility thanks to its full-height glass facades that allow a fluid connection between the inviting interior and the vibrant urban surroundings.
Developed in close collaboration with the owner, the concept reflects his Italian roots and captures the essence of his many travels. The space celebrates a love for food in a warm and friendly atmosphere. The result is a restaurant with a unique identity, different from the other Matto locations, yet fully aligned with the brand’s spirit.
Wood, marble, concrete, wool fabrics, leather, and ceramic patterns all contribute to creating a space that feels timeless and human in scale. These enduring materials, shaped by time, give the restaurant a patina reminiscent of places rich in history, evoking the authenticity of Italy. The soft amber-toned lighting highlights the textures and details of the interior, offering guests an experience deeply rooted in Italian conviviality.
Rich tones of burgundy and ochre infuse the space with warmth and sophistication. A bold central bar anchors the room and enhances the sense of length. Backlighting on the rear wall highlights bottles and spirits, creating a cozy atmosphere, while soft lighting brings out the texture of the concrete surfaces. An oversized wine cellar cleverly conceals a service area while offering a clear view of the open kitchen, a signature element across all Matto locations.
Upon entry, a triangular table with a translucent top speckled with copper immediately catches the eye. Tables of various shapes are arranged to immerse guests in the heart of the action. At the back of the space, a rotating table offers flexibility for different layouts without compromising on design. Ceramic inserts on the floor and in the bathrooms play with contrast and pattern in unexpected ways. A market area invites guests to purchase select ingredients to recreate Matto’s signature dishes at home.
The focal point of the restaurant is a stunning ceiling light fixture that crowns the entire dining area and creates a strong visual impact from the street. Designed by LemayMichaud, the suspended piece is composed of over 200 rings and 25 luminous spheres that seem to float above the open space. Like a piece of fine craftsmanship, it is framed by a ceiling made of felt and curved wood, echoing the coffered ceilings of traditional architecture.
