In 2021, we were approached to breathe new life into a heritage building located at 1600 Girouard Street West in Saint-Hyacinthe. Erected at the end of the 19th century, this building, long occupied by a law firm, was about to begin a new life: accommodating 21 rental units with various typologies.
From the project's initial stages, the desire to highlight the building's historical character guided our choices. The exterior, marked by time and several successive interventions, required special attention. We undertook a project to enhance the facade, restoring key elements of its original architectural language: decorative friezes, cornice with corbels, entablature, and turret. These interventions allowed us to recreate visual coherence with the past and restore the 1600 Girouard building's grandeur in the neighborhood.
The approach was respectful of the site's memory while allowing it to adapt to a new purpose. Inside, each apartment was designed with a unique configuration dictated by the constraints and qualities of the existing structure.
This project is part of an effort to contribute to the vitality of downtown Saint-Hyacinthe, proving that it is possible to preserve the authenticity of an existing building.
