GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN 19th edition

This lamp, made entirely of brass, is an invitation to contemplation and reflection, both in the literal and symbolic sense. Its exterior is patinated with a deep bronze color, while its mirror-polished interior captures and reflects light with intensity. The natural golden hue of the brass harmonizes with the soft warmth of the bulb, creating an atmosphere that is both warm and refined.
The foundational idea of this design was born during a trip to Berlin, where I was struck by the architecture of a building from former East Germany. This building had a prefabricated concrete stairwell, the joints of which suggested shadows forming a
continuous and intriguing line. This line, both simple and elegant, inspired me to transpose it into an object that plays with light and shapes.
The staircase, beyond its utilitarian function, is for me a strong symbol of elevation, whether spiritual, physical, or social. It embodies progression, self-surpassing, the constant quest for improvement and ascension toward an ideal. It is a path that everyone should take to grow and evolve in society.
The staircase holds even more symbolism for me as it marked the beginning of my professional journey as an ornamental blacksmith. It was initially the allure of its elegant line, its almost enchanting sophistication, that made me want to design them. Over time, this aesthetic fascination gave way to a deeper reflection on its meaning. This journey, both personal and metaphorical, finds its resonance in this lamp, which becomes a luminous metaphor and a tribute to the quest for evolution and elevation that animates me.
I designed the lamp in such a way that the mirror-polished interior is never visible directly. The light reflects only outward, as a metaphor for the inner light that illuminates and transforms the world around us. This subtle play between material, light, and shadow invites a sensory and symbolic experience, where every detail tells a story of elevation and light.
Finally, everything I design is made by hand, without the use of industrial machines or numerical control. This prototype presented is therefore half the height of the intended final product, for practical reasons related to the size of the sheet metal and the workspace required. This artisanal approach ensures a quality and uniqueness that I wish to preserve in every creation.
