A second life in the ruins.
Located on the shores of Lake Beauport, this terrace project is situated in a place rich with history and emotion. On this site once stood a family home, reduced to ruins following a fire in the 1990s. When the new owners acquired the property, they were moved by the evocative power of the remaining stone walls. Rather than erase this past, they wished to preserve it and reintegrate it into their daily life by creating a convivial outdoor space in dialogue with the site's memory.
The project was guided by a respectful approach to the existing structures, where each intervention is intended to be measured. The stone walls, cleaned, consolidated, and left in their raw state, now form the partial envelope of a relaxation space oriented towards the lake. The design takes advantage of this natural structure to create an intimate place, sheltered from the wind, conducive to calm and exchanges.
The terrace unfolds in assumed simplicity. It was not about transforming the site but about slipping in a gentle, almost silent presence. Everything was thought out to serve the purpose without diverting attention from the natural setting and preserved remnants. The space invites conviviality: a glass of wine is shared here, a prolonged discussion at the end of the day. Couples, families, and friends can gather there. Here, design serves the experience, allowing the site to tell its own story.
Between memory, landscape, and contemporary usage, this terrace offers a sensitive interpretation of conversion. It demonstrates that it's possible to make something new from the old not by erasing it, but by composing with what is there, and choosing to give it a new lease on life.
