The KA 5740 Retractable Door System is Hettich’s retractable door system designed to conceal doors within the cabinet body when opened. Developed for media units, utility rooms, and customized millwork, it creates clean uninterrupted surfaces while allowing appliances and storage zones to disappear when not in use.
Context
Contemporary interiors prioritize clean sightlines, multifunctionality, and efficient use of space. Conventional cabinet doors require front clearance and remain visible when open, often interrupting circulation and visual continuity.
As storage becomes more integrated into living and working environments, designers require solutions that allow cabinetry to transition seamlessly between open access and concealed order.
Intent
The KA 5740 was developed to enable cabinetry to function as both accessible storage and integrated architecture.
The objective was to:
· Eliminate the spatial limitations of traditional swing doors
· Improve circulation by removing door obstruction
· Allow large storage zones and appliances to be fully concealed when not in use
· Provide a reliable, adaptable system for custom millwork applications
The system is designed to support flexible interior layouts while maintaining a clean, uninterrupted visual environment.
Solution
The KA 5740 is a retractable door system that enables cabinet fronts to pivot outward and slide back into the cabinet body, fully clearing the opening while remaining hidden from view.
This dual-motion mechanism allows large doors to disappear within the furniture structure rather than occupying usable space, transforming how cabinetry interacts with its surroundings.
Key features include:
· Pivot-and-slide motion enabling full door retraction within the cabinet body
· Ball-bearing runners ensuring smooth, controlled horizontal movement
· Integrated roll-out guard for secure operation
· Inset door applications for a flush, built-in appearance
· Compatibility with concealed hinges and mounting plates
· Multiple nominal lengths (300–700 mm) supporting varied cabinetry configurations
· Support for wooden doors up to 19 mm thick
The system accommodates doors up to 1,500 mm in height, 600 mm in width, and 8 kg in weight, making it suitable for a range of residential and commercial applications.
Result
The KA 5740 enhances both spatial efficiency and visual clarity by removing door interference and enabling full concealment of storage zones. Appliances, media units, and workstations remain hidden when inactive, contributing to a more organized and adaptable environment.
By integrating retractable movement into the cabinet structure, the system improves circulation and preserves uninterrupted sightlines. The result is a high-performance architectural hardware solution that supports flexible design while maintaining a refined, minimal aesthetic.
