The new Il Teatro restaurant, opening in the Quartier des Spectacles, celebrates Italian extravagance and hospitality in a setting as lavish as the dishes they serve. This second location brings the spirit of this Quebec City institution to the heart of Montreal’s cultural scene. In this nearly 6,000-square-foot space, understatement gives way to unapologetic maximalism, meticulously crafted to impress and generously welcome guests.
It’s not designed to be discreet: it embraces extravagance and amplifies it. The space is orchestrated around an open kitchen – the central stage – while landings and massive curtains evoke the dramatic height of grand theatres. A vibrant palette of colours and textured materials create a space rich in relief. The generous use of red marble and woodwork harmonizes with the triple cylindrical details of the benches, stools and lighting fixtures. For the grand finale, graphic-patterned ceramic flooring and walls of bevelled mirrors reflect the space’s brilliance and accentuate its extravagance.
Among the project’s signature elements, a custom-designed sculptural fountain is at the centre of it all. Depicting a figure pouring wine, it is the very image of unrestrained sharing. The pursuit of the extraordinary continues on the walls, where a local artist has painted murals reinterpreting Italian Renaissance classics with a rather unconventional touch. Finally, an oversized metal light fixture is suspended above the communal table.
The brand identity crowns this atmosphere of opulence and celebration. The logo, the heart of its identity, depicts an abundantly flowing champagne fountain, a nod to art deco style. Throughout this project, an extravagant aesthetic was developed to convey a lifestyle where more is more. This aesthetic extends to a vibrant photographic style that captures an evening’s spontaneity with flash, brilliantly highlighting this decidedly extraordinary experience. From start to finish, this project is designed as a tribute to Italy’s culture of abundance and generosity.
