Located in the revitalized Port Forum waterfront district of Barcelona, SLS Barcelona is the brand’s first European venture. (SLS Hotels & Residences opened its first hotel in Beverly Hills in 2008 and has since expanded to Dubai, Miami, and Cancun.) The hotel features 471 guestrooms and suites, with views of the Mediterranean throughout. Rockwell Group designed the arrival and lobby experience, ballroom and meeting rooms, fitness and spa, and guestrooms.

For the first SLS in Europe, we wanted to create a design narrative that tied the hotel to its surroundings but avoided the city’s most well-known motifs. The hotel is located on the Mediterranean, where the Besós River terminates, and we were therefore inspired by the moon’s influence on the tide, the cycles and daily rhythms of life, and our emotions. Each of the spaces we designed were translated through the lens of a particular moon phase.

The spa was inspired by the reflection of light on water, and the journey from the surface to the depths of the sea. The arrival begins with daylight and sparkling tones and the journey becomes progressively moodier and darker; dark browns and blues in the changing rooms, a calm and immersive cave-like atmosphere in the treatment and relaxation rooms, and a phosphorescent sauna, recalling the jellyfish. The pool has the effect of a cenote, with a rain effect above.
