The rehabilitation of the F.X. Drolet building, located in the historic Saint-Roch district in Quebec City, marks an exemplary transformation of an early 20th-century industrial building into a space dedicated to justice and public safety. This project illustrates the capability of architecture to reconcile heritage preservation and functional adaptation by integrating contemporary needs while enhancing the building's historical elements.
An architectural heritage reinvented
Built between 1907 and 1909, the F.X. Drolet building reflects the industrial architecture of the time with its red brick facades, large arched wooden windows, massive masonry structure, and wooden roof structure. The rehabilitation sought to preserve these features while ensuring functional and energy standards are met.
The architectural intervention notably focused on the restoration of the facades, cleaning and repairing the brick walls, as well as replacing the wooden windows to combine energy performance and authenticity. The solid wood framework has been highlighted in public spaces, and certain historical details, such as railroad tracks found above the windows, have been incorporated into the interior design.
An architectural concept that is respectful and innovative serving the community
The interior layout was designed to maximize natural light intake, freeing up the exterior walls and utilizing the original large openings. The program was structured around open areas, including a bright hall, lost and found halls, and functional workspaces.
The architecture also incorporates contemporary elements that dialogue with the past: raw metal panels recalling the old foundry and reflective surfaces contrasting with the brick.
The building now houses the Quebec City Municipal Court and a service station for the Quebec City Police Service (SPVQ). Moreover, it hosts a community court, innovative in its approach focused on rehumanized justice. This system aims to support vulnerable populations by favoring social reintegration, marking an evolution in local justice.
A sustainable choice
One of the major challenges of the project was its reuse in order to give it a new purpose perpetually. Solar panels were installed on the roof, and the new materials were chosen for their energy efficiency while respecting the heritage aesthetic. The project thus adopts an ecological and responsible approach, optimizing the building's energy management and reducing its carbon footprint.
A strong urban and social impact
Beyond its rehabilitation, the F.X. Drolet building actively participates in the revitalization of the Saint-Roch district. Located in an area undergoing transformation, it contributes to strengthening the bonds between the city and its inhabitants by offering open and accessible spaces, while asserting the role of architecture as a vector of social and urban transformation.
This project demonstrates that it is possible to combine heritage and innovation, respecting history while adapting to contemporary challenges. Quebec is thus endowed with a strong symbol, embodying both its past and its future.
