Dream by David Rockwell is Rockwell Group’s debut capsule collection for Roche Bobois. Rooted in visual comfort and the elegance of lounging, the collection consists of seven corresponding pieces with seating as the primary focus: sofa, daybed, two different sized ottomans, rug, coffee table, and side table. Our design grew out of a desire to create something soft, simple, and inviting; Vladimir Kagan’s “Comete” sofa for Roche Bobois served as a starting point for us to explore curved, adaptable seating formations in a refined residential setting. From there, we developed a modern system of multi-level comfort that utilizes overlapping organic shapes, sinuous curves, and softened edges. Each piece is imbued with a cloud-like quality that together invokes a tranquil, uplifting dreamscape.
The sofa is the central feature of the collection. Designed to accommodate multiple seating preferences, the sofa has soft, curved edges that slope to flat surfaces that allow users to sit comfortably on the main cushion, perch atop the sofa back, or lean their backs restfully against the sofa while seated on the floor. The upholstered pieces in the collection are composed of distinct, sculptural shaped components allowing for a rich twotoned color palette or a range of solids.
The variety of sitting positions and shaping of the pieces allows one to participate and create their own story. Because of the asymmetrical curves and shapes that define the collection, these pieces can shift and move like a cloudscape, forever adapting to the users’ evolving needs. We achieved smooth curved edges with the upholstery by using a technical and textured fabric that allows for a fourway stretch, minimizing the seams.
