Nestled along the quiet shoreline of Lac Desmarais in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, Desmarais is a contemporary lakeside home rooted in its natural setting. Designed for a family of five, it reinterprets traditional building methods through a modern lens, offering a calm, enduring retreat shaped by craft, material integrity, and spatial clarity.

Guided by steep, wooded terrain and the clients’ desire for a generous yet grounded home, the house follows the natural slope of the site, breaking into staggered volumes that preserve the tree canopy. Arrival occurs from above, at treetop level, before gradually revealing the lake—a deliberate sequence that defines the experience.

At its core, the home’s structure is both framework and language. Traditional timber frame construction, with exposed square-cut beams and time-honored joinery, allows expansive interiors without hidden steel or mechanical fasteners. Each post and beam has purpose, lending rhythm, permanence, and quiet strength. The effect is not nostalgic but inherently architectural.

Materiality is restrained and site-driven. A deep spruce green exterior blends with the forest, continuing inside through millwork, doors, and select furnishings. White oak chevron floors, lime-based walls, natural stone, and soft textiles create warmth without excess. Lighting—recessed, sculptural, or integrated—enhances atmosphere and rhythm throughout the day and across seasons.

The plan balances openness and intimacy. Shared living spaces extend toward the lake, while private areas support autonomy and retreat. Circulation is fluid, with built-in elements defining zones without breaking flow. Views are present but understated, letting nature remain a constant companion.

Sustainability is embedded through design: passive solar orientation, cross-ventilation, deep overhangs, and thermal massing provide comfort with minimal intervention. Locally sourced materials, minimal excavation, and preserved mature trees reinforce durability and environmental responsibility.

Desmarais does not seek instant admiration. It is built to endure—an architecture of patience, restraint, and care. A home that does not perform, but belongs.
