Designable is a modular card-based methodology developed to make inclusive design actionable within creative practice. While inclusive and Universal Design principles are widely discussed in theory, they are often difficult to translate into concrete steps during ideation, prototyping, and testing. Designable bridges this gap by transforming abstract principles into structured, hands-on methods that guide designers through inclusive thinking as part of everyday design work.
The toolkit consists of ninety-six method cards organized into six phases of the design process: Dive Into Discovery, Define the Challenge, Fuel Inspiration, Supercharge Thinking, Bring Ideas to Life, and Learn Through Testing. Each card includes a clear objective, concise implementation steps, a practical example, and a reflective prompt. The structure balances guidance and flexibility, allowing users to follow a full process or selectively integrate methods into existing workflows.
Designable was developed through iterative classroom implementation and professional feedback. Methods were derived from established design approaches including Universal Design, participatory design, empathic design, and studio-based techniques. Overlapping or redundant tools were intentionally consolidated to reduce confusion and support clarity in application. The result is a streamlined system that encourages depth of engagement rather than overwhelming users with excessive choice.
The physical format encourages tactile interaction, collaboration, and visible reasoning. Designers can lay out cards, cluster methods, and map inclusive considerations directly onto their creative process. The toolkit supports diverse contexts, from academic studios to professional teams exploring early-stage concept development.
Rather than treating inclusion as a compliance requirement or final-stage checklist, Designable embeds inclusive thinking from the beginning of the design journey. It reframes diversity as a driver of creativity and innovation, helping designers identify barriers, question assumptions, and prototype for a broader range of human experiences.
By offering a structured yet adaptable framework, Designable enables individuals and teams to integrate inclusive design into existing processes without requiring systemic overhaul. It transforms inclusion from an abstract intention into a repeatable and practical design habit.
