At the heart of the Collège de Maisonneuve lies a unique gem. A large garden topped with a glass roof allows for lush vegetation and an unparalleled living space. However, the place needed a rejuvenation to magnify all the possibilities of the garden. The layout, guided by natural light and the majesty of the plants, becomes an immersive work of art where the vegetation comforts the human experience.
The space now offers friendly and versatile arrangements thanks to new multifunctional and durable furniture made of Douglas fir, Corten steel, and galvanized steel. The terraces and wooden structures define the sub-spaces and bring the scale of the space down to that of humans, thus softening the imposing height of the place. A relaxation area away from the action, equipped with wooden deckchairs, allows students to take a break under the canopy of a palm tree.
The use of forest green complements the verdancy of the place, allowing artist Jason Cantoro the freedom to add bright colors with his three monumental murals, thus counteracting the brutalism of the original architecture.
The Montreal pigeon was chosen as the garden's totem animal. About forty sculpted pigeons color the area and coexist with the users in a way that adds a playful touch to their day.
This inspiring project encourages more green spaces in institutions, bringing light, oxygen, and vitality to the heart of student life!
