ALTÉRITOIRES is a research-creation agency that perceives and designs the city, landscape, and environment as works of art. It approaches the project from a poetic, symbolic, prospective, and reflective angle, as both reality and commentary on reality.
This project was developed alongside the ideas competition launched by the Société du parc Jean-Drapeau for the development of permanent stands on Île Notre-Dame. Our intention is to bring Montreal life back to the site and to reintegrate the site into Montreal life. Our tools are the recognition and reinterpretation of landscape and built forms and figures associated with the Montreal living environment.
ALTÉRITOIRES' proposal is presented in the form of a tale, a fiction, an invented story. The project is seen as a memory, 40 years later - at the centennial of Expo 67, of a dream imagined by a 10-year-old child, Nicolas, during a visit to the site with his grandfather and mother, in 2027.
This nonexistent child would have imagined for the site entrance a grand plaza, a gathering place for all festive events. This public square is flanked by two stadiums traversed by the race track and used for sporting and cultural events at other times. A kilometer further south, the partial burial of the stands under a sand mountain serves as a counterpoint: a picturesque landscape, a natural amphitheater, a "small mountain" echoing Mount Royal. Between the two, the smooth, uniform, and fast road circuit is complemented by a playful route, on a human scale, punctuated by stops, unreal city fragments, games, and shelters. This duality between speed and slowness, ascent and descent, urban frame, and organic landscape, refers to the game Snakes and Ladders, which becomes one of the project's guiding threads.
The cover image represents the visit to the site and what Nicolas imagined it could become.
In order, the following images depict:
Image 1: Conceptual plan of the site inscription of the ladder and urban figures that can be associated with Montreal.
Images 2 and 3: Models of the project in the "pin" sector showing the welcoming "Grand-Place" at the site entrance surrounded by the two stadiums.
Image 4: Perspectives showing the event or daily use of the Grand-Place sector.
Image 5: Concept and plan of the "Little Mountain" in the Senna curves sector.
Image 6: Perspectives showing winter use of the "Little Mountain" sector.
Image 7: Objects, games, and stops along the playful route between the two sites.
Images 8, 9, and 10: Posters presenting the project's conceptual foundations.
