The Christophe Colomb project offered a unique opportunity to transform a traditional Montreal duplex into a spacious and bright environment. This project aimed to expand the 2-story building by adding a mezzanine and extending the ground floor towards the rear to create intergenerational homes for the owners' families.
In order to comply with the density and implementation standards of the Plateau-Mont-Royal borough, the expansion project unfolds in a series of stepped volumes that discreetly harmonize with the surrounding context. Parameters such as height, alignments, and the impact on the sunlight exposure of neighboring courtyards have been carefully considered. The roofs are occupied by different terraces. Access to these terraces from the living room or a bedroom creates a strong connection between the interior and exterior.
The project's strategy was to expand both vertically and horizontally while fragmenting the interior spaces to maximize the influx of natural light. The centerpiece of this transformation is an open staircase on two levels, designed to optimize the entry of natural light into the new kitchen and dining room. This staircase wraps around the dining room with its curved lines, thus creating a fluid space.
The existing second floor has been converted into a modern and functional living space, including an office, a kitchen, a dining room, and a guest bedroom on the mezzanine. Additionally, a green living room has been established on a new rooftop terrace, providing a pleasant and friendly outdoor space.
To create a bright and spacious environment, ideal for daily life and receptions, the emphasis was on contemporary design elements and the selection of high-quality materials. The intention was to simplify the interior spaces as much as possible, which were previously loaded with moldings and heterogeneous textures. With wood, architectural elements like the staircase, the podium, and the open flooring are thus highlighted. The choice of white, simple lines, and curves in the design, soften the space and bring maximum natural light to the heart of the project.
