Ruby Cottage – Linebox Studio

Val-des-Monts, QC

Ruby Cottage is a four-season, lakeside retreat designed for a long-time client of Linebox Studio, nestled into the rugged terrain of the Canadian Shield along Lac McGregor. The design is defined by restraint, subtlety, and an extraordinary sensitivity to its natural setting—resulting in a cottage that appears to have gently “landed” in the forest.

Aesthetics & Appeal

From the water, the black metal-clad form blends quietly into the trees, with floor-to-ceiling windows and Juliet balconies capturing lake views without disrupting the shoreline. The bold red front door, approached by a slim metal bridge, adds a vibrant, welcoming contrast to the dark exterior.

Functionality

Designed for multigenerational living, the single-level layout encourages ease of movement and shared experiences. The plan balances privacy and gathering space, including a generous screened-in porch and seamless indoor-outdoor transitions.

Innovation & Unique Design

Site constraints—steep grades, exposed rock, and limited buildable area—demanded an unconventional approach. Rather than blasting into the terrain, the cottage is elevated on slender columns that mirror the surrounding trees, preserving the landscape while achieving optimal siting and views.

Cohesiveness

Every element is integrated: interiors are calm and light to contrast the shadowed exterior; the ceiling’s warm wood tones echo the forest canopy. Material choices and architectural gestures all contribute to a unified, immersive experience.

Creative Use of Space

With no natural clearing and minimal disturbance permitted, the compact footprint is expertly optimized. Circulation is fluid, spaces are multi-functional, and the forest itself becomes part of the interior through carefully framed views—most notably, the kitchen window, which serves as a picture frame to the trees beyond.

Ruby Cottage is a masterclass in quiet innovation, understated beauty, and respectful integration with nature.
