Perched on a rocky cape atop a hill approximately 500 meters high, the cottage seamlessly integrates into the pine forest and rugged rock formations, offering stunning views over a Laurentian valley. Mr. Blouin and Mrs. Comtois sought an architecture that would embody tranquility and low maintenance. This design fulfills their vision both physically and psychologically through its form and materiality.
Known as the SHIELD HOUSE, the building nestles within the forest like a protective refuge, oriented away from the road and prevailing winds. Its cantilevered roof shields the interior from the southern sun without compromising the expansive views afforded by the glass walls. The durability of the structure is guaranteed by sustainable materials: vertical weathered steel siding, natural white cedar soffits and ceilings in the communal area, and polished concrete flooring. The steel’s evolving patina—shifting from warm orange to deep brown over time—harmonizes with seasonal changes and allows the house to blend organically into its natural surroundings.
Designed on a single level, the residence ensures long-term accessibility. The fully steel-clad front façade provides privacy, while large lateral glazing in the bedrooms and the rear great room opens the interior to light and nature. Subtle variations in ceiling height delineate private and communal zones within the open plan, fostering a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere.
