Borealis
A composition in light and shape
Borealis is a suspended lighting installation for a public atrium. The northern lights in Canada served as the primary inspiration for its composition, particularly their quiet movement and layered light patterns and colors that unfold in the night sky. The 454 individually controlled light tubes, managed by a custom-designed electronic board, interpret natural phenomena through gentle curves and subtle shifts in shape, exploring themes of rhythm and repetition.
The positioning of the light elements at varying heights is informed by the aurora’s layered depth and dynamic transitions. This arrangement interacts with the verticality and openness of the space while maintaining a sense of calm. The installation’s custom ceiling canopy ensures functionality and durability while preserving the purity and flow of the design.
The installation was approached as a spatial intervention that engages the architecture through light, movement, and scale. Its intention is to quietly integrate within the space and respond to the surroundings, inspired by the ephemeral qualities of its main inspiration, the aurora borealis.
