GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN 18th edition
Discipline : Architecture
Categories : Commercial Building / Factory & Warehouse : Grand Winner
Located at Toronto Pearson International Airport, this state-of-the-art jet manufacturing facility comprises two main buildings–an aerostructures manufacturing assembly line and a flight test hangar, as well as several support structures with a richness of scales. Spanning 750,000 sq ft, the complex sets a new standard for enabling precision, efficiency, and sustainability in the aerospace industry, while offering a sophisticated work environment focused equally on performance and employee well-being.
The new aerospace campus marks a strategic leap forward from Bombardier's decades-old Downsview Airport facility, currently slated for redevelopment. Purpose-built to meet the company’s highly specialized needs, the new design integrates innovative architecture and modern materials. It not only accommodates strict manufacturing protocols and regulatory requirements, but also exceeds international sustainability and safety standards to optimize the assembly and testing of jet aircraft.
The new Bombardier facility's production layout enables faster aircraft assembly with complete lines of sight throughout the manufacturing and testing processes. The design successfully coordinates specialized teams, automated equipment, and robotics, resulting in an efficient, accurate and safe production ecosystem. Precise technical requirements necessitated a manufacturing strategy that optimizes energy use while reducing waste to align with Bombardier's commitment to environmentally responsible operations.
Every aspect of this 24-hour aerospace manufacturing ecosystem is designed to enhance employee morale and wellbeing. Abundant natural light, dedicated training and collaboration spaces, and visual connections boost motivation and productivity. Minimal travel distances between workstations, offices, and the production floor increase efficiency while fostering social interaction. The spatial and programmatic intricacy of the campus rivals that of a healthcare facility–where safety, clear communication between staff, and precise outcomes depend upon design clarity and rigour.
