GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN 19th edition
Distinctions

Acquired and developed by Residia Real Estate Development, the redevelopment project of the former Institut des Sourdes-Muettes stands as a major transformation of a landmark heritage site on the Plateau-Mont-Royal in Montreal. This 19th-century complex is now reimagined as a contemporary living environment, combining residential units, communal spaces, and local amenities in an integrated approach to heritage enhancement and urban densification.
The historic building, structured around an "H" plan, forms the core of the project. Its rehabilitation is complemented by new constructions that modestly blend into the urban landscape, creating a clear dialogue between the existing architecture and contemporary volumes.
The interior design approach is based on a sensitive understanding of the heritage features — generous spaces, masonry, window rhythms — to preserve and showcase them. Contemporary interventions adopt a clean and luminous design, where clear materiality and fine details complement the existing structures without competing with them.
The project is also distinguished by its openness to the city.
Pedestrian pathways, visual openings, and active ground floors help transform a previously closed site into a vibrant and accessible environment. The creation of green public spaces and prominent entrances, including a contemporary carriage entrance, reinforces the project's connection to its neighborhood.
Inside, the spaces are designed to offer a quality residential experience, based on natural light, fluid circulation, and the generosity of common areas. These spaces become meeting and sharing places, naturally extending the surrounding urban life.
By combining heritage conservation, architectural innovation, and quality of life, the project developed by Residia provides a modern response to housing challenges while contributing to the sustainable revitalization of the area.
