Strøm Nordic Spa in Old Quebec called on LEMAYMICHAUD Architecture Design to create its facilities along the Saint Lawrence River, just below the Plains of Abraham.
Inspired by the river, the geography and the history of the site, the architects conceived a siting and a massing that recall the docks formerly at that location.
The ensemble is comprised of a main building parallel to the river, completed by secondary buildings, or wings, connected to it perpendicularly, the overall effect an interplay of empty and full volumes that follows the ground surface and deploys toward the river in cascading layers.
The composition of the volumes and the locations of the terraces and basins are intended to maximize access to the river and the vistas onto this vital feature of the landscape. The simple interconnection of the volumes anchors the building to the site, while the materials evoke the place’s portuary landscapes and maritime history.
Both inside and out, the strong volumes are covered with grey wood, black metal and weathering steel, among other materials. The majestic interior volumes help create a contemplative mood perfectly suited to this site that is withdrawn from the world.
The jury underscored the beauty of the ensemble, made possible by the exemplary use of the materials. The many relaxing spaces can be thought of as a reinvented cavern. The minerality of the interior design reinforces the building’s anchoring to the site. Finally, the accomplished lighting scheme is the crowning touch to a project that is successful from all standpoints.
