Wuzhen Sailing Hotel-facade design

By : UAD, workshopXZ

GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 17th edition

Discipline : Architecture

Categories : Other categories in architecture / Facade : Platinum Winner

The Wuzhen Sailing Hotel, also known as DiShang Resort Wuzhen, boasts a unique design concept that resembles a sailing ship. The podium mimics the shape of a hull, while the towers represent the sail. The wood-grained aluminum sunshades on the podium create an undulating rhythm, imitating the ripple waves caused by sailing. The tower’s louvered sunshades resemble the sails of a sailboat, and their well-arranged angles mimic the dynamic shape of sails fluttering in the wind. The louvers also reflect the water’s surface under sunshine, creating a beautiful play of light and shadow. At dusk, the exterior facade is illuminated by floodlighting, creating a poetic scene of a solitary ship sailing across the vast river, heading towards the never-ending horizon.

The facade design of the hotel results in a colorful appearance when viewed from different angles, creating an ever-changing scene experience in the Chinese-style landscape. In terms of the thoughtful arrangement of the rotating angles of both wood-grained aluminum sunshades and louvered sunshades, the designers considered the direct sunlight angle to realize the architectural envision while meeting the requirements for sustainable building. The sunshade’s angle on the facade can effectively block 80% of sunlight, control heat transfer, maintain a stable indoor temperature, reduce energy consumption, and achieve near-zero energy consumption.

The curtain walls of this project include two types: the double-layer unitized curtain walls and the frame curtain wall systems. The north and south facades of buildings 1-3 from the second floor to the top floor adopt double-layer unitized curtain walls, composed of an outer honeycomb aluminum panel shading system and inside glass material. The rest are frame curtain wall systems that integrate glass curtain walls, honeycomb stone curtain walls, aluminum curtain walls, honeycomb aluminum curtain walls, zinc copper titanium alloy coverings, aluminum awnings, and glass awnings.
