Wuxi Xuntang ancient town Shuxiang Mansion Hotel

GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 15th edition

Discipline : Interior Design

Categories : Accommodation, Restaurant & Bar / Boutique Hotel

The ancient city of Xuntang is the epitome of a century-old Wuxi, a prosperous and lively gathering place with a strong trading vocation, representing a charming calling card of the cultural vocation of the place.

Under the charm of white walls and black tiles, this city is as silent as the old man who has passed the test of time and tells the story of the Mindu era. Dive through the river of time to explore the cultural context of its origins and growth; pause on the patio protected by four eaves and listen to the melody of an ancient ballad. “Grow from the earth and face the sun” is one of architect Wright’s most famous mottos as he pondered the relationship between architectural design and nature.

Human beings are part of nature and always tend to get closer to their roots by seeking constant contact with nature. The designers of the project considered the importance of creating a unique connection with nature by designing the space in such a way that its occupants could enjoy all the beauty that the natural world provides. As the sun shines and the years pass, it is important to allow the old buildings to gain a new vitality through a transformation that gives them a certain luxury, while taking into account their own originality. Let’s respect the history, let’s respect the architecture, in symbiosis with nature and a happy sharing with the benefits of the sun.

The local culture has always benefited from the processing of silk, hemp and other textiles, materials that were used in consideration of local conditions. We have used these textiles to dress the space of this ancient residence with a focus on creating distinct tones with meticulous detail.

As this complex is part of a group of old residential buildings, it was important during the transformation process to reinforce the stability of the building and to ensure that the traces of time that have marked it were preserved. This presented a significant challenge in terms of structural reinforcement and planning the interior configuration. And, after much time spent in discussion and argumentation, we were able to find an optimal solution that allowed us to realize the entire project. It is by protecting the original features of old buildings that they can be allowed to shine again with a renewed style.
