Waterloo Park has been an essential part of its community for over a century, serving as a hub for ecological diversity and community togetherness. The area drew its earliest settler, Abraham Erb, in the early 1800s. In 1816, Abraham established his original grist mill along Laurel Creek, which was strategically dammed to create Silver Lake – a key feature of the park today. Sediment accumulation pushed Silver Lake to its capacity, prompting a 2018 environmental assessment study.
Following the study’s recommendations, The City of Waterloo allocated a budget to rehabilitate the lake, creek, and park, aligning with the Waterloo Park Masterplan. The multi-disciplinary team, led by SDG, crafted a design focusing on long-term sustainability and ecological balance while still prioritizing community needs. Emphasis was made to preserve mature trees, enhance the fish habitat, and nurture terrestrial ecology by removing sediment from Silver Lake and reconfiguring the shoreline of Laurel Creek. The 7.3 acre park redevelopment now boasts modern amenities such as an urban beach, outdoor concessions, and captivating sculptures and fountains. With thoughtful incorporation of naturalized areas, lighting, and accessibility features, the park welcomes each member of the community to experience the ecological richness and inclusivity it has to offer.
