Patriarche discovered an incredible space in the heart of Old Montreal, nestled beneath the roof of a historic building. Recognizing the potential hidden behind the magnificent beams and brick walls, the architecture firm, alongside its subsidiary Walter, decided to create uniquely designed office and coworking spaces.
Working with existing architectural components to preserve the essence and charm of the location, the team opted to divide the spaces linearly, maximizing the utilization of the available area. The resulting layout consists of 4 distinct sections:
Section 1: Workspace and Reception
The first section of the project is dedicated to open workspace areas, designed to provide a dynamic and productive environment for occupants. The arrangement of desks and workstations encourages collaboration and idea exchange among team members.
Section 2: Common Services
The second section houses common services such as the café/kitchen with its mezzanine dining area, restrooms, a large training room, as well as elevators and staircases. These spaces are designed to be functional and welcoming, offering occupants all the necessary comforts for their professional routine.
Section 3: Meeting Spaces and Private Offices
The third section is dedicated to more confidential meeting spaces and enclosed offices. These areas provide companies and teams the opportunity to meet in privacy for discussions or focused work. Additionally, a cozy rest area, two isolated phone booths, a bright second coffee corner, and lockers have been integrated into this space, enhancing the user experience.
Section 4: Event Space
The fourth section has intentionally been left bare of any furnishings to allow for hosting large-scale events. This versatile space can be transformed as needed, providing great flexibility for organizing professional events.
Concept and Interior Design
The concept of Walter Montreal’s layout revolves around highlighting existing architectural features, such as red brick walls and massive wooden beams. This approach seamlessly combines the charm of the past with contemporary functionality. The resulting atmosphere is relaxed and visually appealing, with natural light playing a significant role, filtering through multiple skylights scattered throughout the space. Unique details, such as the airplane nose-shaped suspended fan, add a touch of originality while emphasizing the impressive ceiling height.
The design team meticulously worked to create a distinctive visual identity rooted in Montreal’s essence. Patriarche took charge of designing and manufacturing customized signage, providing clear and intuitive guidance for users, thus facilitating their navigation through the space and access to various services and features. Meeting rooms were named in homage to the city’s iconic neighborhoods, while the café, named “Le 5e” for its location on the fifth floor, offers a soothing and inviting ambiance. Enriched with suspended greenery, it provides a haven of tranquility amidst the professional hustle and bustle.
