The work « Promenade au jardin » created by Bouchervilloise painter Susan St-Laurent was offered to the City of Varennes, Quebec, for acquisition.
One of the important elements of the client’s bid was a visual simulation created using photomontage, to illustrate the work’s presence in the context of a municipal building. Beforehand, documentation was created by the artist concerning a possible place for hanging the work (colors in place, furniture, photographs of the places, etc.).
Considering that the technique used by the artist was possibly unfamiliar to the acquisitions jury, the artist provided the latter with written information and samples enabling them to appreciate the technique of digital printmaking on acrylic panel or aluminum.
Concept of the work and the project
- The painting proposed to the City of Varennes is a single-edition polyptych composed of 5 digital prints of identical dimensions.
- The subject of the work is inspired by nature, incorporating a touch of abstraction and the imaginary. It is an exclusive original creation inspired by the omnipresent vegetation in the City of Varennes.
- The aim was to illustrate an immense, dishevelled garden, to express the dynamism and lightness of plant elements well integrated into the ambient surroundings.
- The work came into being through a fusion of realizations, both with the painter’s traditional tools and with applications for digital creation with the computer and iPad tablet. Thus, hand-painted motifs were digitized to create the floral designs, while digital tools were used to arrange all the plants in the garden.
- In the end, the shapes of the flowers, leaves and stems are all the result of the natural gesture of the hand; they bear cheerful colors that could appeal to audiences and visitors of all ages.
