How to organize and qualify the outdoor space of a small residential backyard?
This project, which began with a desire to improve the layout of a backyard, was quickly enriched with details, rooted in everyday life. The first objectives of the program were soon to establish a rich dialogue with the client. The desires identified were to increase intimacy; include storage spaces; integrate flower beds; and above all, create spaces for rest and relaxation.
The new layout of the backyard takes advantage of drawing a singular, diagonal path, to focus the gaze at the end of the backyard where a majestic mature cherry tree stood. To highlight it, the raised path is set with a series of white steel frames, along a steel rusted foot grate floating from the ground. Along this route, the visitor accesses new living spaces among garden spaces.
Three distinctive, functional spaces have been added to the layout: a front porch-terrace for relaxation and reading, a communion pavilion for gathering around a table and a storage locker. Each space incorporates architectural elements to heighten the experience. The planters provide support for climbing plants and give privacy to the new porch-terrace. Added to the series of light and openwork frames, a roof punctuated by a circular opening that directs and opens the gaze to the sky. In the storage locker, a semi-translucent green panel gives the year a dazzling liveliness. All these details seek to predispose and guide the visitor to take a poetic look at these privileged outdoor spaces and develop a conscious and deep appreciation of our relationship our immediate environment.
