The creative agency Sid Lee brought us in to design a pair of one-of-a-kind tables for their themed conference rooms. The client wanted the tables to push the envelope, existing at the intersection of furniture and sculpture, to be functional pieces as well as works of art, and to both fuel discussion and inspire curiosity.
The first conference room, named Thundercloud, suggested a dark universe, with the cold and incisive clarity of a bolt of lightning. We designed a custom steel table, evocative of a massive boulder which has been shattered by a powerful thunderbolt. Built in such a way that it can be easily mounted, the large modular table, with a diameter of 8 feet, is made up of several laser-cut pieces. For the finish, we opted for a sand polish and a clear powder coating, creating a surface that reflects the glow of a custom pendant light fixture. The final result is a piece which seems as if it was born from the raw power of the elements.
The second room to be furnished was called Seventh Heaven. For this soft space, symbolically suspended between dream and reality, the client was looking for something noble, a piece that would invite the imagination to soar. We were inspired by the shapes of clouds to create an airy structure on which a white marble top seems to float. The table rests on inverted arches, four steel pillars created using a rolling technique; the whole structure is welded, but gives the impression of being very light. The result is a spectacular visual effect, at once solid and delicate, connecting the heavens and the earth.
