SLDR is a 2,000-square-foot casual dining venue in New York City [USA] offering a large array of hamburgers and craft beers. This project is the first, proof-of-concept establishment of a new franchise to be launched in the US first and, subsequently, worldwide.
The client’s design brief required that we deliver a space with immediacy of message and an upbeat vibe that would appeal to a generation of visually inclined patrons.
Starting with such clear requirements, the design of the restaurant was originated from the primary architectural values of light and color. The dining room is organized on a number of basic structures and surfaces of vivid colors which give the space cinematic fluidity. Upon entering the restaurant, guests see a long and slender seating area comprised of a network of bright orange powder-coated steel members with integrated lighting. Sunflower yellow upholstered stools accompany this bold gesture that is visible from the street [becoming an attraction]. In fact, this element appears to be the main gesture within the space, one which gives identity to the brand.
Across from the main seating device is the service counter clad in teal glossy tiles vertically laid, while the ceiling is finished with hand-applied matte plaster of concentric elongated shapes. At the rear of the dining room are a further seating area and a folding wall surface finished in green matte plaster bearing the brand logo.
From the outside, the venue appears enticing and vibrant, as the interiors are one with the storefront. Looking in, one can easily fathom the layers of colors and the message of an upbeat environment, and can expect a unique and detailed experience. The brand is clear and recognizable, and it seems to bridge the immediacy of a retail brand and the welcoming and positive message of a hospitality brand.
