Baywalk is a public development in Qianhai area of Shenzhen, China. It is a 1.5 km long multifunctional elevated linear park with underground pathway, retail and public opened-space on ground level. It connects the coastal bay area of Qianhai with the Bao’an Stadium, and winds through the central business district. Baywalk creates an open, shared and ecological city park in the Qianhai Bay Area, which will become a new landmark in Shenzhen.
The structure is separated into 3 multi-functional levels, which are a skybridge, various ground floor outdoor spaces, and an underground commercial area. As the Baywalk interconnects with destinations such as Sports Arena, Library, malls, office buildings and cultural parks, Baywalk becomes the direct shuttle passage to reach those destinations for users arriving from public transport.
The Site ID is made-up of a hollow-formed stainless steel sculptural logo and letters with transparent tinted colour acrylic front to match the casings and internal white LED edge outlines.
Baywalk is split into 8 zones, each zone having its own architectural design language and, at the neighbouring areas, the surrounding environment provides distinctive characteristics. The nature of Baywalk is its simple integration of everyday routines; a user friendly, relatable area providing a casual, relaxing space that can provide versatility for everyone. And with the diverse activities that can happen in these spaces, it immediately becomes a personal experience for everyone visiting the site.
To continue the consistency of the brand, we decided to extend our concept with the circle shapes for the wayfinding signage design. Our signages are thus comprised of circles or rounded forms. The circles represent totality and wholeness which reflects what the project is, a linear park with all the elements for all ages, whilst maintaining an impression of fun, avoiding any institutional feel.
Most directory and ID Signage will be with illumination at night, either externally spot-lit or internally lit by LEDs. Signage need interchangeable messages will be digitally inkjet on white translucent 3M Flexible Substrate mounted to internal sign frame and protected by clear polycarbonate covering. Signage with permanent messages will be directly cut out from spray painted stainless steel panel backed by white acrylic diffuser.
The in-door site directory on B1 is a double sided sign, each side with a 43” interactive touch screen LCD TV monitor housed inside a bead blasted stainless steel casing, the overall sign face will be covered by clear polycarbonate sheet with 3M transparent mirror graphic film mounted on the rear side to hid internal structure and supports.
Lift directory signage on glass wall will be silkscreened on the rear side of the glass in the factory before delivering to site for installation.
For public safety, 1F sculptural Zone IDs are made from EPDM high compact rubber recycling granulates of various colours with reinforced galvanized stainless steel internal structures bolted to concrete floor slabs.
The pop-art like signage may have visual impact to the environment, but by adding in harmonious circles in them, it projects a feeling of calm and comfort. The objective was to create a soft, friendly signage system that embodied a wayfinding function that is easy for people to navigate, to enrich the whole journeys’ experience. The simplicity of our signage design provides the space with young and friendly image, the cultural and creativity perfectly match with the modern living style. It gives the characteristics to the project, and also reflects the energetic and dynamic image of Qianhai Bay.
