Located in the unique urban context of Plateau Mont-Royal, this house echoes its values and atmosphere: A contemporary gesture with a high respect for its surroundings. Conceived for a multigenerational family, the project’s distinctive architecture is a hymn to the built heritage. Thus, the brick covering it is inspired by the shades of the surrounding colors. Moreover, the entrances and the balconies are arranged in wooden alcoves, a unique reinterpretation of the overlooking neighbors’ porches and perched balconies. The vertical dwelling on three levels offers a setback from the urban context, allowing the general silhouette of the neighborhood to be preserved. It is through this interpretation/reinterpretation that the project gains sociable acceptability, proposing and architecture that is responsible and sensitive to its local, historical, and regional environment.
Offering contemporary, well-calibrated living spaces, the judiciously positioned living rooms on the upper floors benefit from the views and a considerable amount of natural light. The living spaces are articulated in a disctinct volume, made of wood and glass. Designed like a mezzanine, the layout allows vast terraces, sometimes covered, and gardens adjacent to the various indoor spaces. In addition, the layout offers an unobstructed 180-degree view of the surroundings and the Mont-Royal. It is in those vast open spaces that family and friends gather and appreciate the sun, the city, the nature. Found on the lower floors, the more private rooms gain a sense of protection. Crossing the different levels of the household, a spectacular and sculptural staircase acts as a spatial piece of art and lets in the light of the gigantic skylight above it. All the rooms lead one into another and embrace an inner courtyard giving to the inhabitants the feeling to have their own piece of natural heaven. Complimenting it, the architecture is meant to be inviting, warm and sensible place of communion, a space of tranquility and nature in the fast-paced environment of the metropolis.
