Many felt that this poorly maintained ’70s house wasn’t worth renovating; it would be cheaper to demolish and rebuild. But that was not an option for the new owners, who were enchanted by the existing building and determined to preserve its architectural DNA.
In fact, it was with this premise that they approached La Nony FAMILI when they decided to transform this large, three-story, 4000 square foot chalet into a primary residence for their young family. The company’s mandate was as follows
Make the home healthy, comfortable and functional
Honor the existing while updating the style of the building
Inject a » contemporary ski chalet » spirit with a touch of originality
Make the openings as large as possible to « bring nature inside the house ».
The La Nony FAMILI team began by listing the components that seemed to be the riches of this construction: the monumental ash staircase, the huge stone fireplace, the wooden ceilings with exposed beams, as well as the successive volumes that make up the house, with their roof slopes reversed in relation to each other.
Preserving and enhancing these elements became the initial inspiration and guide for the project. Ornamental steelwork and splashes of color enhance the interplay of lines present in the architecture, giving a graphic edge to the whole, while the choice of sober, warm materials for the rest of the project – bleached ash, limewash paint, painted panels – evoke calm and comfort.
All spaces and openings have been redesigned. The former front balcony becomes an extension of the living area, now completely open and with many windows facing the forest. The living room, facing both the view and the fireplace, can be transformed into a « luxury TV room » thanks to the integration of a giant television on a rail, in the supporting beam of the extension.
A walkway is created at the level of the cathedral ceiling to allow for the new layout of the upper floor and the addition of a children’s room.
What used to be called « the basement » is now a bright garden level with the main entrance and a family room, in addition to the technical rooms.
The multi-level staircase, sandblasted, stripped of its risers and revived by the new bottle-green banister, resumes its place as the centerpiece of the house. The replacement of the old entrance door with a large glass opening floods the entire staircase with light, unifying the 3 floors..
The entire envelope is also brought up to date: completely revised insulation, the most efficient triple-glazed windows, new siding and roofing. On the exterior, variations in material types emphasize the rhythm created by the house’s different volumes, while black and white tones pay homage to winter in this Sutton Mountains home.
