Résidence Jeanne-Mance

By : Cardin Julien

GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 17th edition

Discipline : Architecture

Categories : Residential Building / Private House > 2 000 pi2 (> 185 m2) : Gold Certification

The Jeanne-Mance residence project involved extending an existing 1950s house in the Ahuntsic neighborhood. The house no longer met the needs of the large family of four children, so Cardin Julien planned an extension with the addition of two bedrooms upstairs, as well as a bathroom adjoining the master bedroom. The project also included decompartmentalizing the first floor to create an open plan with a new kitchen, dining room, living room and den. Ideal for the family, a new wide vestibule with storage space was also created.

The extension extends to the rear and side of the existing building. A double height with the upper floor is created and is fitted with large glazed windows on one side of the building allowing natural light into the heart of the residence. In this way, the vestibule and living areas can benefit from this luminosity.

Completely renovated, the kitchen has doubled in size and includes an island and dining area for the whole family. Functional and with durable finishes, the kitchen is fitted with storage to conceal the usual appliances (coffee machine, toaster, sparkling water machine).

On the ground floor, the kitchen is equipped with an island and a dining area for the whole family.

On the first floor, a curved wall wraps around the powder room and lets in natural light through a glass wall. This wall, with its textured wood cladding, opens up the space towards the kitchen and reading area. This curved motif is repeated punctually throughout the project to create a coherent whole.

For the family’s needs, storage has been improved and multiplied throughout the house. Particular attention was paid to the choice of materials so that they would be durable and easy to maintain for family life.

Cardin Julien offered a turnkey project and accompanied the customer in researching and making choices including lighting fixtures, furniture, faucets, plumbing fixtures and hardware.

The master bedroom is cantilevered. The presence of this new volume thus creates a covered outdoor terrace, an outdoor space easily accessible from the first floor rooms. Beneath the cantilever, the white cedar soffit provides continuity with the gypsum ceiling inside. The outdoor terrace features wide steps for accessing or sitting in the courtyard.
