The ECAR Residence project is a renovation of the main floor of a single-family home located in the Verdun neighborhood. To meet the occupants’ needs, a study was conducted to find the most suitable solution, offering a more open living area while maintaining the privacy of the dining room and living room. Thus, the load-bearing wall between the dining room and kitchen was removed and the openings were enlarged to maximize natural light.
It was essential to respect the character of the house. The hardwood floors were carefully restored to give them a new revival. The woodwork and interior doors were also preserved, while the original radiators were moved and repolished to blend perfectly with the black finish of the new doors and windows.
Each element was positioned to optimize the kitchen experience, improve circulation and visual aesthetics. The concern for alignment was thought from demolition to finishing by aligning the window in front of the sink, the architectural door, the wall cabinets, and the ventilation at the same height.
The kitchen was designed with the clients’ wish to choose durable and natural materials in mind. White oak accents were added to add warmth to the monochrome color scheme. The exposed structure of the cabinets and the details of the shaker lacquered doors add a classic and timeless touch that blends with the character of the residence.
A coffee bar corner was created in a cabinet with pockets doors, allowing the family to access it at any time or conceal it for a minimalist look. LED strips under floating shelves were added to create a warm ambiance during evenings with friends.
This project, inspired by Nordic design, is an example of how intelligent renovation can combine modernity and respect for the historical character of a house.
