This renovation of a single-family Canadian home in the suburbs of Montreal retains its cachet with multiple thematically closed rooms and checkered fenestration. Leaning against the kitchen countertop, a new rectangular window opens onto the courtyard, bathing the space in natural light. Installed as a cantilever, it gives depth to the countertop and a view of the garden.
From the entrance, the revisited existing staircase offers transparency through its new black metal railings. Relocating the walls allowed direct access to the basement and garage, as well as oversizing the area. White wallpaper with gray floral graphics illuminates the room. Topped with a light fixture, the stone-effect gray porcelain floor unifies the spaces, projecting towards the living area and giving the residence a spacious effect.
Revealed as soon as we arrive by a huge opening, the spacious kitchen is a tribute to sobriety, with black taking pride of place. The choice: dark by night and luminous by day.
The 70s-inspired turquoise ceramic rounded island serves seating on one side and food preparation on the other. A round black sink updates the look. A stove section with European wall motifs feeds the cordon-bleu imagination. A black ceiling with engraved motifs, smoked glass furniture with concealed lighting and a bar with exposed bottles, give the bistro effect sought after in the evening. Hanging lights above the island and upholstered high chairs add atmospheric and visual comfort to the space.
During the day, the washing, cooking and coffee-break areas are exposed to the brightness reflected on the glossy black-patterned ceiling.
The family room, an extension of the kitchen, incorporates a wood-burning fireplace and comfortable sofa and provides access to the outdoor pool. Juxtaposed, a small terracotta-colored powder room with natural concrete sink and black-and-white 20’s mosaic flooring shines with originality.
At the other end, the convivial dining room stands out for its uniqueness. Black wallpaper with colorful floral and hummingbird motifs gives the room soul. Blue velvet chairs complete the layout. The existing black checkered windows and interior greenery enrich the space. The hanging lights above the table are a souvenir of travel and make a distinctive wink. Opening onto the table, a private lounge is finished in olive green, and features face-to-face sofas for chatting with friends. The curtains were salvaged from the former dining room and harmonize the whole.
Upstairs, the room opens onto the family room like a mezzanine. This area serves as a transition between the private spaces and the staircase. A passageway displaying works of art, this reading corner inspires culture and tranquility. Bordered by a black metal balustrade, it leads to the bedrooms and private spaces.
This home transcends joie de vivre and happiness.
