This new home was built for a young family.
The client wanted to build a very contemporary home, but restrictions of a well-established neighbourhood with traditional homes meant the exterior would be a traditional brick and stucco house to reflect the neighbourhoods existing architecture.
The approach to the interior was a complete contract to the exterior. We wanted a contemporary spare, but not cold or uninteresting. There is a harmony of rich materials and finishes. The staircase, which is a major feature through three floors of the house, has simple paneling with LED light strips integrated, complimented by a luxurious textured wool carpet, bronze pendant lights, and bronze under-lit handrails. The kitchen is functional, with bronze and glass doors leading to a walk-in pantry and a butler pantry to the dining room. The natural beauty of the book matched stone and patinated metal hood of the cooktop creates a focal point, and adds beauty, as well as artistry to the kitchen.
The family room opens to the kitchen. The traditional windows in the black make the transition from the exterior to the interior. SYD custom furniture mixed with Platner stools create modern classic furnishings. The focal wall of the TV and fireplace is the room’s focal point. The fireplace wall is finished in combed granite to add a softer effect next to the bookcase in ebonized oak and Elitis vinyl textured background. The bronze and glass doors connect and disconnect the room from the kitchen.
The open dining and living room has a ceiling of floating planes of drywall with dimming fixtures extending through the gaps of the floating planes. The light fixtures are like suspended sculptures. The dining room backdrop is a wall of ebonized oak with an intricately cut pattern. This adds texture and warmth to the room, and disguise a door connecting the dining room to the butler’s pantry.
The living area is furnished with a custom sofa by SYD, custom tables and rich jewel tone chairs from Mantis. The bar area, finished in burnished metal, pulls the whole room together. The finish was decidedly soft to keep the dining wall as the stronger backdrop to this area.
The powder room is a geometric composition of granite, ebonized oak and gunmetal. The varying materials is the same tone create interest and harmony.
The home office/gift wrapping room is a light bright place for everything from homework to crafts, with everything neatly store out of sight.
Principal bedroom, a tranquil space again, combining elements and finishes, but in a lighter tone for a harmonious restful space.
The principal bathroom addresses all functional requirements, but continues the design language of light floating surfaces (mirrors this time) to create harmony and interest.
The home is a four floor residence, so it is impossible to share everything in 10 photos. Our mission was to create a home for a young growing family, and their needs.
Aesthetically the client wanted a contemporary minimal space that wasn’t cold or ordinary.
We are proud of the project, the interior architectural approach is both light, contemporary yet warm and inviting. The furnishings mostly designed by SYD allowed the perfect compliment. Thank you.
