The redevelopment of Plaza St-Hubert is a perfect example of a major integrated urban project involving a complete and in-depth redevelopment of the public right-of-way. The flagship project promotes active transportation and integrates a new canopy and new public spaces for the street. The project also incorporates principles of conviviality and universal accessibility for pedestrians.
The new canopy is distinguished for its discretion, which highlights the distinctive and iconic character of this commercial artery. The pedestrian area has been enhanced by the widening of the sidewalks and equipped with new and playful street furniture. This improvement updates and reinforces the distinctive character of the street. All of the project's components are also enhanced by festive lighting that can be programmed according to the seasons.
The project is innovative in terms of urban ecology because it integrates a prefabricated "Silva cell" planting pit system used for the first time in an urban project at the City of Montreal. The system ensures the durability of the canopy, with its 8.5m3 of growth space per tree and the stormwater management of the sidewalk by infiltration through tree grates.
