Posada Terra Santa

By : Rockwell Group

GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 17th edition

Discipline : Interior Design

Categories : Accommodation, Restaurant & Bar / Boutique Hotel : Gold Certification

Posada Terra Santa is a small boutique hotel located in the heart of the historic city center of Palma de Mallorca. It was founded in 2014 by Ignacio Jiménez and his wife Carmen (of Hidden Away Hotels) who fell in love with this historically significant building that unfortunately had fallen to a state of disrepair. Since then, Posada Terra Santa has been a quaint hidden treasure in Palma’s historic quarter. In 2023, Ignacio and Carmen asked our Madrid studio to bring their beloved hotel up to date with a fresh look.

Heritage

The hotel building dates back to 1576 and once served as an epicenter of commerce and trade for the island. During the original restoration, Hidden Away Hotels discovered gothic arches as well as large clay jars used to store grain and food. Even the building’s original coat of arms, featuring a deer (which inspired some of Rockwell Group’s fun design elements), was found on the facade of the main elevation. Although there was a strong historic presence, we felt there was also ample room to reinterpret and imagine the building’s future. The design proposal called for a lighter intervention, so we primarily focused on FF&E and sparingly implemented new architectural finishes so as not to detract from the inherent beauty of the space.

Post Luxury

In 2024, luxury is about returning to a state of wellbeing, unique, tailored experiences, timeless spaces, and connections with friends and family. We came back to this idea as we organized and rendered spaces with textures and materials that exude a sense of ease, quiet, and comfort.

Slow Design

Slow design maintains a sense of place and originality. It’s a sustainable luxury that connects to tradition, culture, and context. We were inspired by the craftsmanship and art inherent to Mallorca and translated this in the finishes and furnishings for the hotel.

Layers

Considering all that Posada offers in the heart of Palma, we found ourselves returning to the idea of layers: Layers of history, layers of experiences, layers of discovery. In Posada, guests move through gothic arches and come across relics of centuries-past, creating a rich connection to place and the past. Our design language expresses these many layers through architectural forms, materials, and color.
