LEARNING SQUARE – AT THE HEART OF THE SGW CAMPUS
Strengthen the university hub of the Sir George Williams (SGW) campus in downtown Montreal
Interfaced with Norman-Bethune square, at the intersection of Boulevard de Maisonneuve West and Guy street, the construction of the modular classroom building reinforces the university hub of the Sir George-Williams (SGW) campus in downtown Montreal. A place for meeting and socializing, the Learning Square is defined on the south side by the GM administrative building and Guy metro station, as well as by the urban landscaping of pavers, trees, benches signage and lighting.
LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE
Acting as a backdrop to the north side of Learning Square, the dynamic façade of the modular classroom building, integrating vegetation, screens, signage and lighting, adapts to the various seasons, day and night, thus reinforcing the university character in its urban settings.
With the collaboration of NIPPAYSAGE, the project was enhanced by the integration of vegetation in synergy with the built components of the galvanized steel volume of the main façade.
The plant components of shrubs, grasses, perennials, bulbs and climbing vines on a stainless steel mesh contribute to the composition of the facade while increasing urban biodiversity. This innovative vertical landscape offers a space of thermal comfort, dynamic flowering for winged fauna and pollinators as well as a percolating soil for the absorption of rainwater and evapotranspiration. This urban landscape component revitalizes and breathes new life into the Learning Square, at the heart of the SGW campus.
