Passage réfléchi & immeuble infini

GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 12th edition

Some art collectors wished to establish two installations inside the basement of a low-ceilinged residence. The architect masterfully designed an incomparable, almost unsettling, diptych.

The first part of the project transformed a narrow corridor into a multi-storied edifice through the illusory properties of the mirrored surfaces covering the floor and ceiling. Running along one of the sides, steel cabinet doors cover the facades and strengthen the space. This elegant amplification, all in pure lines, maintains the corridor’s function as a passage while resulting in an intriguing monolithic volume of aluminum.

Inside, the small room is completely covered in mirrors. When the door is opened, the light, reflected every which way, triggers a vertiginous vision. In this second part, the unit produces an infinity effect whereby the theme of the building-within-a-building, so dear to the architect, takes on an atypical form while remaining anchored in reality.

An infinite metamorphosis of space achieved through the use of simple materials. Mind-boggling.
