GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 15th edition

Discipline : Landscape & Territories

Categories : Landscape Architecture / Landscape Architecture - Public Space : Silver Certification

Located at 2455 rue Larivière near Frontenac metro station, the development of Walter-Stewart Park is one of the many efforts the borough is undertaking to revitalize the Sainte-Marie neighborhood. The first phase of work made possible the integration of a new community garden into the park in conjunction with the city's first community greenhouse. The existing baseball field on the site had to be moved and a bicycle path was built, thus facilitating east-west travel between the boroughs of Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve and Ville-Marie.

The development project aims to create a park with a strong signature and identity for the Ville-Marie borough by focusing on sustainable, responsible and efficient facilities. The underlying scheme for Walter-Stewart Park is focused on maintaining and improving community facilities and existing uses, integration of new facilities in an optimized space, maintaining green spaces, improving access and travel flow as well as improving pedestrian access with the neighbourhood;

The construction of the park chalet stands out for its architectural quality and the choice of materials. With a view to sustainable development, the construction of the chalet is innovative not only in its function but also in the materials selected, including the incorporation of recycled shipping containers. The incorporation of a green roof now allows vegetables to be cultivated for the community greenhouse, an innovation much appreciated by the local community.

In addition to the chalet, the construction of a basketball court, a free play area (micro soccer and volleyball), two calisthenics areas and the installation of a ping-pong table all work to create a real sporting and cultural center.

The addition of these features not only to raise the overall quality of the park, but together with strategically incorporated lighting work in tandem to reduce vandalism.

Walter-Stewart Park is a unique green space in the city. This redevelopment improves this premises by adding sustainability and durability to this active community space.

With this mandate gmad was able to demonstrate great innovative creativity and professionalism for a complex program.
