Deux îlots de verdure à Griffintown, sur terre et sous le ciel

Two islands of greenery in Griffintown, at street-level and in the sky

In this project, two underutilized spaces are transformed into lush green spaces, to the delight of citizens and nature alike.

At street level, a pocket park between two buildings is planted with a grove of pine trees, shrubs, colorful perennials, and vaporous grasses where passers-by can enjoy the sunshine in this densely populated neighborhood.  A sinuous low wall in Corten steel retains a large quantity of fertile soil, where the grove of pine trees will eventually create a cool, fragrant forest canopy.

Once inside the residential complex, an elevator takes us up to the sky.

On the top floor, the viewer is met by a spectacular view of the Montreal skyline.  A large green roof offers numerous possibilities for relaxation, physical activity and mental well-being.

Perennial border lawns to create intimate spaces for reading and contemplating the view.  A large vegetable garden brims with activity, and vegetables in various stages of growth. A pétanque (bocci) court and a jogging track made of recycled rubber provide a more athletic type of exercise. Residents come together to share a meal under one of the two pergolas.

What’s more, the roof features a diversity of plants that absorb rainwater, counter the heat island effects, and reduce urban air pollution. Native plants create a local ecosystem adapted to the Canadian climate and heighten public awareness of urban biodiversity.

Thanks to these two islands of greenery created in under-used spaces, humans and other species breathe, enjoy the sunshine, and soften the hard mineral surfaces of the city.
