The MoonLander spacecraft is a central element of Moonfall.
Directed by Roland Emmerich and designed in close collaboration between Kirk Petruccelli (production designer) and Frédéric Amblard (vehicle designer).

This spaceship, using refine lines, was inspired by the work of both Boeing and SpaceX, though It has the characteristics of being a virtual and fantastic design for a Sci-Fi film. The Moonlander had to physically be able to fit in the cargo area of the space shuttle ‘Endeavour‘.

The goal of this movie was to remain as realistic as possible, and also, the ship Moonlander is designed to look like a vehicle that goes into space in 2020 and then returns to earth by parachute with a heat shield and the separation of the central module during the re-entry phase to Earth. The vessel uses an aerospike engine, and solar panels to produce its energy. The architecture is broken down into three modules: the Capsule, the Service module, and the Lunar rover.
Aerospike thermal shields and solar panels are deployed for navigation once in a space vacuum.

To meet the filming requirements, the ship Moonlander was thought as a set of modular elements to limit manufacturing costs and help speed up the dismantling of the various panels/walls, without sacrificing the design and aesthetics of the ship. It uses panels elements made of composite materials, 5-axis machined moulds, thermoformed plexi-glass portholes, 2D cutouts of CNC wood and laser cuts of steel structure parts.

All of the dashboards and the ergonomic of the cockpit were designed primarily for the lighting of the set.
The habitability and the ability of the crew members to move in zero gravity mode, using cables (simulating the absence of gravity), while having the possibility of putting the cameras close to the actors, was another design criterion which enabled us to capture each of their emotions during the different action scenes. The budget and the manufacturing time was respected, which made it possible to deliver the Moonlander on the day of filming in the midst of the covid pandemic.
